What is a sensory room?

A Sensory Room is a magical interactive space filled with light, colour, texture and sound. Originally developed to support children with Special Educational Needs, we’ve learned that a Sensory Room benefits everyone, which is why all children at our nurseries use our rooms regularly.

This therapeutic space helps to foster hand-to-eye co-ordination, social skills, colour recognition and language development. It also offers a calm, comforting safe place for relaxation, essential for your child’s emotional health.

You’ll find Sensory Rooms at The Elms and The Oaks.

The Elms Day Nursery

The Elms was the first Birmingham Day Nursery to develop a Sensory Room, thanks to baby room staff who understood the impact they can have on child wellbeing. Inside, your child will engage their senses: exploring the different textures of the adventure walls; watching the play of lights, colours, moving shapes and bubble tubes; and listening to soothing sounds.

The Oaks Day Nursery

Inspired by the positive response to the Elms’ Sensory Room, the Oaks now has one too! Here your child will experience an enchanting environment surrounded by sensations: soft soundscapes, the gentle flowing movement of colour and light, and interactive shapes and textures.
